Gary Pearson (Jaguar XJR-11) took a brace of
hard fought victories for the JD Classics team on the superb Brands Hatch Grand
Prix circuit. Mighty duals with Le Mans winner Charlie Agg (Nissan R90CK) kept
the crowds on their feet throughout an hour of enthralling racing.
Having been collected by Graham
Hathaway's spinning Jaguar XJR-12LM early in Saturday's race, David Mercer
(Spice-Ford SE90C) chased the leading pair hard in Race 2. As the Nissan's
tyres faded, Mercer pounced to take second at Druids on the final
lap.
Third on Saturday went to
Nigel James (Porsche 962C) rewarding a drive typical of the increasingly
competitive nature of Group C-GTP Racing. From seventh on the grid, James
fought hard to reach the podium. A broken rotor arm prevented a repeat
performance on Sunday. Justin Law followed, making a one-off appearance, aboard
Nick Rini's Jaguar XJR-12D. Rini brought the car home eleventh in Race
2.
Henry Pearman (Jaguar XJR-11)
just held off Brian DeVries (Chevrolet Intrepid RM-1) for fifth. On Sunday,
Pearman had to contend with the close attention of Michael Schuster (Argo-Judd
JM19C) before the Argo began to understeer towards the end of the race. Once
again, Schuster's East Racing team had worked an all-nighter having an input
shaft machined and replacing the offending item.
As DeVries spun out early in Race 2, Martyn Konig
clipped the rear wing of the Intrepid with the side of his Porsche 956.
Thereafter, a persistent misfire plagued his run to sixth, but he still took
another class win. Debutant, Alvin Powell enjoyed a perfect weekend with two
class victories in his ex-Porto Kaleo Tiga-Ford GC288. Saturday, in particular
saw a cracking dice with Mike Millard (Prosport-Ford LM3000), who was also on
his way to a double in the Invitation category. John Edwards followed them home
each day aboard his Texas Argo-Ford JM19C.
Christopher Catt and Ian Stinton also made debuts in new machinery.
Catt brought his Prosport-Ferrari LM3000 home second in the Invitation class
before retiring from Race 2. Stinton's Argo-Ford JM19B was hampered by
electrical gremlins on Saturday, which unfortunately proved too big a hurdle
for the car to make the grid on Sunday.
Stinton's problems allowed Richard Bateman to take
dual Class 4 honours in his Tiga-Rover GC287. The other Class 4 car, Duncan
McKay's Bardon-Ford, suffered from a misfire in Race 2 after early retirement
with a broken gear lever in the hands of Robin Ward on
Saturday.
Saturday's retirees, Jim
Graham and Richard Oddie both had improved fortune. Graham worked hard to bring
his Take Fuji Porsche 962C through to eighth, whilst the Hepworth International
team were delighted with Oddie taking twelfth in their thundering
Argo-Chevrolet JM20.
