2006 Race
Reports
Brands Hatch, England,
3-4 June 2006
|
A fantastic weekend of top class, competitive, safe racing with
some of the most beautiful cars at one of the very best circuits in the World,
and in 28 degrees!
We were always going to see a great tussle at the
front with David Mercer Spice SE90 on pole in a 1:20.051 (117.95 mph)
and Justin Law, Jaguar XJR12 just 0.567 seconds behind, both being chased by
Richard Eyre, Jaguar XJR16, Mark Sumpter in his first run in his Porsche 962
and an amazing drive by Gary Pearson in his late C2 ADA Cosworth
DFZ.
Gary, who is normally seen challenging for 1st spot in Derek Hood's
Jaguar XJR11 has set a new standard for late specification 'C2' cars doing a
1:25.114 at 110.93mph in Race 2 on Sunday. After the race he said "The car
is absolutely wonderful to drive with terrific handling and I am sure we can
make it quicker!"
Race 1:- Law lead for 15 laps with Mercer
playing a waiting game, determined to take the lead, and at the end of Lap 16
that is where he was, holding it to the end with Law just 2.8 second behind.
Richard Eyre in the Jaguar XJR16 was wishing he had a better choice of ratios
to get closer but still finished a fine third. Sumpter and Pearson had a great
battle finishing fourth and fifth respectively and just 5 seconds apart. Jim
Mullen was left to his own devices, finishing 6th and was followed home by a
very close group of Stinton, Rini, Oddie and Eyre (Martin).
Class
winners were Mercer, Pearson, Pearman and McKay.
Race 2:- Both
Mercer and Law were determined to take the lead at the start - Justin Law after
the race:- "I was absolutely NOT going to back off on the outside of Paddock
at the start but I could not make it stick - great stuff!"
Law
battled hard but Mercer took the flag with a 1.436 second gap. New entrant
Sumpter was thrilled to be third and will obviously get quicker as he gets to
know the car. Pearson took a super 4th and Mullen, once more in a lonely race,
again took 6th. A feature of the race was the 'train' of cars in the middle of
the pack running nose to tail for the whole race and Oddie, back after a knee
operation, lead the way for Eyre (Martin), Pearman and Stinton. Competitive?
Yes, the top ten cars had all lapped the circuit at under 1:30s during the race
and the top five under 1:25s!
Class winners were again Mercer, Pearson,
Pearman and McKay. |
