Erwin Kremer

Sad news in that Erwin Kremer died last week. Many of you will have known Erwin 'in period' and many of 'us' have come to know him through the racing in the last few years.

This little 'story' illustrates what a true enthusiast he was!

Erwin was completely 'mad' about racing and, following his heart attack two years ago this week, as we all prepared for Dijon, things were not looking too good.

Gunther and the team came to Dijon, where Casper Elgaard drove the Kremer Porsche 962 to two wins, which pleased Erwin lying in hospital. (See race Dijon in the race Race Reports 2004 on our website and the PS before the qualifying times).

I rang Andreas at the works on Monday to find out how he was and he told me that he had discharged himself from hospital, as a Japanese Team had phoned to ask whether he could help with some 'brake' testing at Nurburgring on '993' !!

We should not forget that, with his brother Manfred, the Kremer Team won Le Mans, Daytona and the 24h at Spa plus were European and Interserie Champions and finished in the top ten nearly 20 times between 1970 and 1996 at Le Mans, a fantastic achievement.

He was 'astute' too. Having bought the odd car off him and some parts from time to time, he came to buy some parts off me. "I will pay you when I next see you" he said.

"No Erwin," I said "we are good friends and I (Jim) intend that we should remain so. We will adopt a 'mutually satisfactory' arrangement where we both pay before delivery!". He was a bit taken aback but we have remained good friends ever since!

Erwin drove in their first 5 races at Le Mans (1970-74) and, amazingly, finished in the top ten THREE Times at Le Mans. In the end there were Kremer team cars at Le Mans for 31 years, the last time being at the Group C/GTP Racing event in 2004.

The Kremer team ran something over 130 top drivers in this period, many of whom became household names, including our Patron Derek Bell. "How very sad, such a wonderful Team constructed by him and his brother and typified the Sportscar entrant of the past 30 years, I really enjoyed racing with him."

A real character with an imaginative memory and a true racing enthusiast to the end.

A great supporter and friend of the Club.

We shall miss him and pass on our best wishes to his family and friends.

Penny and Jim hope to get to the works 'memorial' after the private family service on Thursday to say goodbye to a friend and to represent all Erwin's friends in the Club.

The funeral service for business partners, friends and companions takes place on Thursday 5th October around 15.00h in the workshops:-
